FIFA boss Gianni Infantino continues to face backlash over the governing body’s approach to the OneLove campaign.
Harry Kane was among the captains who wanted to wear a special armband to promote LGBTQ+ rights on Tuesday, but FIFA reportedly informed those involved that he could face an immediate yellow card, or worse.
As such, England and Wales were among a host of nations that backed down at the last moment and many were disappointed to see the protest halted.
Former Rugby Union referee Nigel Owens, who came out as gay in 2007, said: “Hopefully a lot of good comes out of this and that FIFA will take a hard look at itself… They have certainly let themselves down.”
