Whyte secures Joshua rematch with Franklin win

Eddie Hearn confirmed that Dillian Whyte has secured a rematch of Anthony Joshua with his majority decision victory over Jermaine Franklin tonight. According to the Matchroom Boxing boss, they will meet in March or in the summer, depending on Whyte’s recovery. The Body Snatcher won with scores of 115-115, 116-112 and 116-112 in his favor after an extremely competitive fight.

From the opening bell, it was clear that Franklin had the speed advantage as he unleashed with sharp combinations. By varying the trajectory from body to head, Franklin was able to keep Whyte guessing with his back foot, though The Body Snatcher’s trademark left hook was always threatening.

In the second round, Whyte began to work the body and rough up his foe, but Franklin kept his cool and returned fire well. Third and fourth saw the Brit begin to walk down Franklin and land heavily with the American visibly slowing down with each club stroke.

A spirited effort from Franklin past the quarter-lap mark kept things competitive with the sixth swing in his favor after a difficult fifth. Franklin got his second wind and picked up the pace when Whyte showed visible signs of frustration.

Coming into the final round, David Haye on the DAZN stream had it even, and that seemed about right. Neither seemed to be doing enough to get past him until Whyte landed a huge left hook that bounced Franklin off the ropes in the final seconds.

A nervous few minutes followed as the judges tallied up the totals, with Whyte outscoring him, securing his long-awaited second date with Joshua in the process.

Asked if the plan now is to do Whyte vs Joshua II, Hearn said on the DAZN broadcast: “Absolutely, that was a great heavyweight fight and well done for Jermaine Franklin. I think Dillian had to win those last three. rounds to win the fight I think I needed to win 10,11,12 to get through it but I think that’s the fight to do and Dillian Whyte is moving on.

“I thought it was a great performance from Jermaine Franklin but yeah AJ is here his fight date will be announced next week. I would love it to be Dillian Whyte but maybe he will rest and AJ will go first in March and we do it in summer”.
