Earlier this week, the 80th Golden Globe Awards took place at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, USA. At the mind-blowing event, some amazing performers were honored with awards, including Austin Butler for his impersonation of Elvis. Presley and Ke Huy Quan for their performance Everything Everywhere All at Once. But the show’s host, Jerrod Carmichael, has come under fire for a joke about Whitney Houston.
Carmichael took aim at several major Hollywood stars throughout the night, including the likes of Tom Cruise. However, it was a taunt about Houston that caused confusion among viewers.
Houston died at age 48 in 2012 after accidentally drowning in a hotel room bathtub. It was later confirmed that the I Will Always Love You singer was suffering from the “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use”.
With this in mind, Carmichael quipped during the ceremony: “So, we’re here, live, from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, the Beverly Hilton.”
Now, the Houston estate has hit back at his joke, calling it “tacky.”
They said in a statement: “The Whitney Houston Estate is disappointed in the prank and felt it was in poor taste.”
TMZ noted that the estate message came from Pat Houston, Houston’s longtime manager and sister-in-law.
The singer’s estate was compounded by her disappointment by a series of fans who rang on Twitter during and after the Golden Globes ceremony.
One wrote: “I’m normally a fan of Jerrod Carmichael comedy. But I just can’t understand why you’d think a Whitney Houston death joke would be funny. It wasn’t smart or relevant.”
Another fan wrote: “GET IT. Jerrod Carmichael is disgusting AF for pulling such a grotesque and vulgar ‘joke’ on Whitney Houston. It was so unnecessary. No one in the audience took it well. He was horrible all night.”
Houston’s death in 2012 left a deep mark on the music industry. Many tributes poured in from professionals, including the legendary Tony Bennett.
He mourned the loss of another music icon, saying, “First it was Michael Jackson, then Amy Winehouse, now the magnificent Whitney Houston.”
He added: “When I first heard her, I called Clive Davis and said, ‘You finally found the best singer I’ve ever heard in my life.'”
