Matthew Perry opened up about his ’90s romance with Julie Roberts in his book “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing,” sharing that they were a great couple when they filmed his “Friends” cameo. “I let her in, both figuratively and literally, and a relationship began,” he recalled (via The times), revealing that he even spent New Years with his family and played together in 1996. But this high-profile romance didn’t last long, and the two broke up after just two months together. “Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had always been sure she was going to break up with me. Why wouldn’t she? I wasn’t enough; I could never be enough,” she shared heartbreakingly. “Instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts. She might have considered she was in the slums with a TV boy, and the TV boy was now breaking up with her. No I can begin to describe the look of confusion on his face.”
However, Roberts, who divorced Lyle Lovett in 1995, clearly didn’t feel the same way. Speaking in “The Late Show with David Letterman” in 1996, she proudly confirmed that she was dating Perry and revealed that it all started because he called her out of the blue. “She was so nervous because he’s terribly smart and funny and handsome,” she gushed about the actor.
