Trouble in Butetown at Donmar Warehouse overhaul

Diana Nneka Atuona’s play is set in an extravagantly cosmopolitan boarding house run by Gwyneth (Sarah Parish) whose two daughters are the result of their interracial marriage.

When Nate, a black American soldier (Samuel Adewunmi), hides in the garden to escape military police, the family’s loyalty is tested.

An old-fashioned play, its conspicuous naturalism is at odds with the subject-driven melodrama. Solid performances keep energy levels high but, theatrically, it’s a lamb in a ram’s clothing.
