Every year it still seems hard to believe (and even harder to accept) that the world lost Freddie on November 24, 1991. After bravely battling AIDS while holding court and entertaining friends and family from his bed even in the past few weeks, the star has finally let it go. As his condition had deteriorated, Freddie only allowed his inner circle to see him in those last few days, and they were there, day and night, making sure he was never alone. Mary met the Queen star when she was 19 and they dated for six years until 1976. Yet she remained by his side for the next 15 years as his dearest and most devoted friend.
Freddie left him his West Kensington mansion and most of his fortune. Although he went ahead and dated men, eventually ending up with Jim Hutton, Freddie and Mary’s bond was unbreakable. She was one of the few people he trusted to care for him in his last days and the only person entrusted with his ashes.
Mary said: “During those moments I really felt a lot of love for him. They were the moments that I remembered every time I looked at his bed. I would sit every day at his bedside for six hours, whether he was awake or not.” She’d all of a sudden she’d wake up, smile and say, ‘Oh, it’s you, old faithful.
Although it is easy to dwell on the tragedy of the situation, everyone who was there talks about how much love and even laughter there was.
Freddie was confined to bed in those final weeks as AIDS slowly took his life, but he was never left alone, with Jim sharing care with personal assistant and friend Peter Freestone, and chef and ex-boyfriend Joe Fanelli.
Mary came every day, along with Freddie’s close friend Dave Clarke, who was by his side when he died.
Mary spoke movingly of her final moments with the man who had always referred to her as his “common-law wife.”
One Garden Lodge, West Kensington, was bequeathed to Mary in her will along with a third of all future earnings from the Queen star’s band. It is believed that the house remains as Freddie left it, although many years passed before Mary was finally able to enter her room and face her memories.
She said: “I spent so much time with him sick and there were so many memories in that room. Memories of him suffering. I just saw this very frail man lying in his bed and I was reminded of all the little things I used to do for him. Combing his hair, because he would lie back and all his hair would stand on end.”
Freddie had said of Mary, “I’ll love her until I take my last breath.”
And that’s exactly what he did.
