Steven Gerrard sacked immediately by Aston Villa after Fulham defeat

Aston Villa have officially confirmed the sacking of Steven Gerrard, with the announcement coming just hours after their 3-0 loss at the hands of Fulham on Thursday night. The former Liverpool midfielder was relentlessly attacked by the Villa fans who attended Craven Cottage during the latter stages of the contest, in which his team remained one place outside the Premier League relegation zone after collecting just nine points in 11 matches.

A host of Villa fans had turned against Gerrard for quite some time before his sacking, and Thursday’s loss at Fulham ultimately proved to be the final nail in the coffin for the 42-year-old. His dismissal was confirmed shortly after the final whistle in a short statement released by Villa, who will begin the search for a new permanent manager in due course.

A club spokesman is quoted as saying: “We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”

Gerrard is the fourth Premier League manager to be relieved of his duties since the start of the campaign after Scott Parker, Thomas Tuchel and Bruno Lage. He replaced Dean Smith at Villa Park in November last year and is leaving the club after an 11-month reign, during which he guided them to a 14th-place finish at the end of last season.

The former Liverpool and England playmaker insisted in his final post-match interview as Villa manager that he would not quit his job unless told otherwise, although that conversation ultimately did take place less than two hours after the plenary session. Time whistle at Craven Cottage.
