England manager Gareth Southgate has perfectly demonstrated why Jude Bellingham would be an ideal signing for Liverpool next summer. The 19-year-old Dortmund star has established himself as one of the most promising midfielders in world football and is being touted for a big-money move to the Premier League in the near future.
Bellingham has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea, but it is Liverpool who still appear to be the most likely option. The Reds are in desperate need of a midfield upgrade, with the likes of Jordan Henderson and James Milner outperforming their best.
Manager Jurgen Klopp would also love to add another leader to his squad. And speaking after Bellingham was selected in his 26-man squad for the World Cup in Qatar, Southgate provided an example of how much Bellingham thrives when given responsibility.
“When Jude went to Euros (in 2021) we thought it was a good experience, but he wanted to play more,” Southgate said. “We think that for a 17-18 year old it is a very good transition.
“His mentality was ‘no, I want to start, take corners, be the captain of the team.’ Jude has tremendous maturity for his age in the way he works, trains and talks. He really competes, and that’s what we like most about him.
“That has a line, and sometimes there will certainly be moments where it crosses. But he is a very exciting player. He is one that we have a good experience from the beginning. But he is a player who has had a very tight schedule.”
Liverpool will have to offer a lot of money if they are to tempt Dortmund to sell their prized asset. However, they may have taken a hit in their search after an agent suggested that Bellingham might be in favor of moving elsewhere.
Speaking to Caught Offside, Haydn Dodge, who is connected to the Bellingham camp, said: “It’s no secret: Liverpool are looking for Jude Bellingham. Madrid have made their interest known to him.
“They have said that they see him as part of the replacement for Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. They want Bellingham to form a three-man midfield along with Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga. And that is a terrifying prospect. I could still go to Liverpool already in January. But Real Madrid are certainly doing everything they can to make it difficult for Jurgen Klopp.”
Before discussing his future further, Bellingham will have his full attention on England and will hope to feature in the starting line-up when the Three Lions take on Iran in their Group B opener on 21 November.
