Sebastian Vettel was seen crying after an emotional speech in the final race

Sebastian Vettel was seen crying moments after completing his final Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi. The four-time world champion admitted he would miss the sport in an impassioned speech after getting out of the car.

The 35-year-old German finished tenth in Abu Dhabi but Aston Martin failed to secure sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship as Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren passed Vettel for ninth.

After the race, an emotional Vettel said: “You know how it is. I wish it had been a couple more points. But I enjoyed the race, I think today was a bit of a different warm up going into the race, but once the lights go out it’s in race mode.

“Today maybe we didn’t go for the best strategy. It was a shame because I think we could have changed the constructors’ championship for us. Overall it was a great day and thank you very much for all the support. So many flags and so many smiling faces, that It has been very special, very nice.

Vettel made some donuts for the crowd after the checkered flag to bid farewell to his 15-year career, which won him four drivers’ championships with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013. Fernando Alonso had suggested he would get involved in the celebrations before the end of week. but he couldn’t after he retired.

Vettel started the race from ninth place and initially challenged Esteban Ocon’s Alpine in the early laps. However, Aston Martin kept him out to make a one-stop strategy which saw him drop to the back of the field after his first stop.

The German defended himself on the field, but criticized the team’s decision on the radio. He told his race engineer: “How did we get our strategy so wrong?”
