Ronaldo ‘sacrifices £16m in wages’ after he terminated Man Utd contract

Cristiano Ronaldo will reportedly not receive a payment after his contract with Manchester United was terminated by mutual consent on Tuesday. The forward’s interview with Piers Morgan appeared to be the final nail in the coffin for both parties and the 37-year-old is now a free agent.

Ronaldo’s contract at Old Trafford expired at the end of the season, although his revealing interview prompted United to clamp down on the Portuguese international. The Red Devils were paying him £500,000 a week, although he will not receive that money.

According to the daily mail, Ronaldo has “said goodbye” to the £16m he would receive if he stayed at United until the end of his contract. The same report states that the club has not paid any compensation to the Portuguese international.

Ronaldo can also join any club he wants now that he is a free agent, and United previously feared he would leave them and strengthen another top-four rival. That will be music to Chelsea’s ears, with Todd Boehly particularly keen to secure his signing in the summer before then-manager Thomas Tuchel pulls the plug on the play. Although it remains to be seen if Graham Potter is willing to work with the striker.

During Ronaldo’s explosive interview with Morgan, the striker aimed several shots at Erik ten Hag and claimed he had “no respect” for the Dutchman. He also said that most of United’s facilities hadn’t changed since he left the club for Real Madrid back in 2009.

However, he insisted that he still loved the club in his parting statement. He said: “Following discussions with Manchester United, we have mutually agreed to terminate our contract early.

“I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never change. However, it seems that the time is right to look for a new challenge. I wish the team a lot of success for the rest of the season and for the future.”

Ronaldo could, of course, take a pay cut when weighing his next move, although even reduced salaries would leave numerous clubs out of the race to secure his signature. The former Juventus star received an incredibly lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal over the summer, but opted against joining the club in favor of moving to a Champions League side, although his stance could change if no other. suitors emerge from the woodwork.
