Queen stars have no idea if John Deacon has seen Bohemian Rhapsody

Freddie Mercury was particularly close to John Deacon, often traveling on tour together, while Brian May and Roger Taylor gravitated towards each other. Returning to television tonight, Bohemian Rhapsody showcases the close bonds between all the bandmates and the extraordinary story of their rise to that iconic 1985 Live Aid performance. The film was a staggering success, grossing over $900 million at the worldwide box office and aiding the latest resurgence in the band’s seemingly never-ending popularity. And yet, Deacon was not involved in the production or promotion of the blockbuster and Taylor admitted that he and May “have no contact” with his reclusive bandmate.

Taylor previously admitted that he hadn’t spoken to his bandmate for “over a decade… I haven’t heard a shriek from John, not a single guttural growl.”

May and Taylor still keep Deacon informed of all financial concerns regarding the band by mail and have revealed that if they don’t hear from him, they assume he’s happy with his decisions. The bass player was also sent the first scripts of the film for his approval, but that was as far as his participation in the project.

She did not participate in the interviews or on the red carpet for the film, just as she has not appeared at any Queen event or anniversary since she took the Ballet for Life stage on January 17, 1997, at the National Theater in Chailioton in Paris, along with Taylor, May and Elton John.

May told Rolling Stone magazine: “John doesn’t want to be (involved). He’s in his own space and we respect that. It’s a shame, because we’d love to have him around, but he doesn’t want to be in that one.” sand more… he just doesn’t want to walk those roads.”

Speaking to Mojo, Taylor was asked if Deacon had seen the film: “No idea. We don’t have any contact with John. I wonder if one of his sons might have gone to see it. Who knows?”

In fact, Deacon continues to live quietly and inconspicuously, a far cry from his former superstar life…

Band members and Deacon’s friends have spoken about his withdrawal from the public eye and the music industry, but the musician himself has never publicly commented on the matter after he left the band in 1998.

Everyone agrees that Freddie’s death hit the shy and quiet star particularly hard.

In a recent documentary, Taylor added: “After Freddie died, it took me a year to start wanting to think about doing things. I just thought, ‘Calm down and try to live in the present and see how you feel.’

“John got scared and decided he couldn’t bear to be in the music business anymore. It was a strange period. The band was really over.”

Deacon still lives with his family in the same house he bought with his early Queen royalties, a four-bedroom suburban house in Putney, London.

He met trainee teacher Veronica Tetzlaff in 1971 and they were married on January 18, 1975, when she was expecting their first child, Robert. The couple have five more children: Michael, Laura, Joshua, Luke and Cameron.

Ruth Bullen, the wife of Nigel, John’s best man at their wedding, said of Victoria: “She’s a lovely person, unpretentious. Over the years, I get the impression that her children are the most important thing to her.”
