Peter Jackson Talks About The Newly Announced Lord Of The Rings Movies

Amazon may have bought the TV rights to The Lord of the Rings, as the first of five seasons of The Rings of Power debuted on Prime Video last September. However, Middle-earth Enterprises, which owns a vast catalog of intellectual property and the worldwide rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, has now been acquired by the Swedish company Embracer.

Owning Middle-earth Enterprises means the company can create new movies, video games, board games, merchandise, theme park attractions and stage productions based on Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

In a statement last August, the company said: “Opportunities include exploring additional films based on iconic characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, Galadriel, Eowyn and other characters from JRR Tolkien’s literary works, and continuing to provide new opportunities for fans explore this fictional world through merchandising and other experiences.”

And now Freemode, a division of the Embracer Group, is teaming up with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, who made the Lord of the Rings trilogy, for “multiple” new movies based on Tolkien’s writings.

According VarietyFreemode CEO Lee Guinchard said: “Following our recent acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises, we are delighted to embark on this new collaborative journey with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, bringing the incomparable world of JRR Tolkien back to the big screen. screen in new and exciting ways.

“We understand how appreciated these works are, and working together with our partners at New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, we plan to honor the past, look to the future and adhere to the highest level of quality and production values.”

There are no filmmakers attached to the upcoming films as of yet, but Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy director Peter Jackson and his collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are clearly involved, and have also made a statement.

Jackson said: “[Warner Bros and Embracer] they have kept us informed every step of the way. We look forward to continuing to speak with them to hear their views on moving the franchise forward.” Meanwhile, Warner Bros has an anime movie coming out called The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim.

The prequel takes place 260 years before the events of The Two Towers and stars Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, a legendary king of Rohan. He is tasked with holding his own against an army of Dunlendings, before becoming the namesake of the fortress known as Helm’s Deep. Additionally, Miranda Otto reprises her role as Éowyn from the original live-action trilogy, as the film’s narrator.
