On the 25th anniversary of the Titanic, James Cameron sinks the theory of Jack’s death

Not that Cameron isn’t busy releasing the first of up to five more Avatar sequels. The former hit theaters last week and this is clearly the director’s lucky “sweet spot” on yearly calendars since he, too, released Titanic 25 years ago. And in 2022 he’s still haunted by endless theories and desperate cries that poor Jack would have survived if only he’d been allowed out of the frozen ocean and onto that convenient floating door.

Before we get to the “science”, one thing has always been clear. Charming as Jack’s miraculous survival may have been, it wouldn’t have had the same impact we all sobbed over Celine Dion over the end credits.

Cameron himself previously said: “It’s a movie about love, sacrifice and mortality. Love is measured by sacrifice.”

The tragedy certainly helped propel the film to over $2 billion at the worldwide box office and a place in the history books before it was surpassed by the same director’s Avatar to become the biggest movie ever.

However, to mark the anniversary, Cameron carried out rigorous testing and made a short film about his findings.

Winslet had previously agreed with the chorus of fans who were convinced that Jack could have survived alongside her.

However, he recently told the Happy Sad podcast: “All I can tell you is that I have a decent understanding of water and how it behaves. If you put two adults on a paddle board, it immediately becomes extremely unstable.” That is sure.

“I have to be honest: I don’t really think we would have survived if we had both climbed on that door. I think it would have fit, but it would have been flipped over and it wouldn’t have been a sustainable idea.”

Winslet concluded, “So, you heard it here for the first time. Yeah, it could have fit in that door. But it wouldn’t have stayed afloat. It wouldn’t.”

So far, Leo himself has not made any recent comments on the subject. But then why would he have wanted Jack to survive? The movie undoubtedly made him the biggest star in Hollywood at the time and he’s not doing too bad 25 years later.
