On screen, the big sets looked spectacular and compelling, as did the passionate central subject matter. But behind the scenes, that too was a lot less glamorous and passionate than it sounded.
Hilariously, it was Christie’s love of a good old-fashioned British egg sandwich that caused the problem, especially when it came to romantic scenes, according to her co-star’s grandson, Omar Sharif Jr.
He said: “My grandfather told me that he had come from Egypt and had never seen a sandwich before, but Julie just brought them out from everywhere. He was like, ‘Where do these come from?’ Pretty much between every take, he’d pull out one of these sandwiches. Then she’d have crumbs everywhere and when it came time to kiss her, she’d have this sandwich breath.”
“She was beautiful, but he was like, ‘What’s with this sandwich girl?’ That’s what he called her, the Sandwich Girl.
