Next James Bond candidate Idris Elba wants to ‘take over’ as Luther

After Daniel Craig stepped down from the role of James Bond after No Time To Die, the internet has been awash with rumors about who could replace him. The name Idris Elba came naturally, and he has figured prominently in the Bond odds ever since. But the British actor thinks he’s found something equally powerful in his new Luther movie.

Elba has been plagued with questions about becoming the next 007 for years, but he doesn’t talk about it anymore. In a conversation with Magic Radio, he explained: “The Bond series is an incredible staple for the UK and the world, but Luther could have part of that property.”

He previously said that he’s “not going to be that guy” when referring to the media storm surrounding his casting of 007: “I’m going to be John Luther. That’s who I am.”

Speaking about his new film (Luther: The Fallen Sun), he added: “It’s not about spying, it’s about how to catch them. I think Luther tends to be a little bit more relatable, you know, grounded. You know guys who are crawl under your bed.”

At 50, Elba is probably too old to become the next James Bond, but that, and his growing popularity, hasn’t stopped rampant speculation.

The fervor got even worse when Bond boss Barbara Broccoli told Deadline that he was “part of the conversation” about the next Bond movie.

“Well, we know Idris,” he said. “I’m friends with him and he’s a terrific actor… but it’s always hard to keep the conversation going when you’ve got someone in the seat. I think we’ve decided that until No Time To Die is over and Daniel has been able to, well, We’ve all been able to reap the benefits of Daniel’s wonderful tenure, we’re not going to think or talk about anyone else, actors to play the part or stories or anything. We just want to live in the moment, in the present.”

As a result of these comments, Elba’s odds of becoming 007 skyrocketed.

Elba currently has 16/1 odds of becoming the new and improved James Bond. And he’s in good company, currently sitting head-to-head with Aidan Turner (of Poldark fame) and just behind the Bridgerton hunk Regé-Jean Page.

Elsewhere in the odds is Tom Hardy, who is a staggering 9/1 upon becoming 007. As well as Henry Cavill, who is closing in on the top of the rankings at a mighty 5/2.

Even though he still has a long way to go as far as the odds go, Elba is focusing on the release of his film Luther. Something of which he has claimed to be “very proud”.

Elba also told Magic Radio how excited he is to build an ever-growing cinematic universe with the no-nonsense detective.

“Hopefully it’s the beginning of a new chapter,” he said. “It sounds cheesy, but you know we’ve moved on from TV, we’ve gone as far as we can go and now, we have the world as our stage. Big epic landscapes and you know endless stories.”

He also added that he would “love” to do a musical: “I started out, my first semi-pro job was Guys & Dolls and I played Big Jule and I loved it. And I was the understudy for Sky Masterson so I did the whole song and dance number, and I loved it.”

You can listen to the full interview with Idris Elba on Monday on Magic Radio Breakfast starting at 6am.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is in theaters now and hits Netflix on March 10.
