Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie were together for years after their split

Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson’s marriage only lasted 18 months, from their May 1994 wedding to their December 1995 separation. It was widely viewed with great skepticism both during and after its high-profile collapse. Many believed that the King of Pop had only married Lisa Marie as a smoke screen against the growing rumors and accusations surrounding her relationships with small children. It was also clear that he was fascinated by her connection to Elvis Presley. But Lisa Marie – who died on January 12, 2023 after suffering a cardiac arrest, at age 54 – gave an emotional interview after the star’s death on June 25, 2009, which revealed a totally different side to the union of she. She also said they had continued to see each other for years after her divorce and that Michael had cried when she begged for help in 2005, a decade after her divorce.

The world only saw their brief time together, but the couple had been close for years before that. Michael had taken notice of her when she was young and then waited for her first marriage to Danny Keough to end. Even after her own divorce, she didn’t want to let him go.

Lisa Marie told Oprah Winfrey: “We were going to get back together. We spent four more years after we got divorced…getting back together and breaking up, talking about getting back together and breaking up…

“He and I just kept going… I flew all over the world with him for the next few years.”

Michael had married Debbie Rowe and become a father to Prince Michael and Paris, but there was never any indication that the relationship was anything more than a practical transaction for the children.

Lisa Marie gave a powerful insight into the intensity of their love and insisted that it was just as sincere of her.

She said: “I know he’s had a few dates in his life, but there was nothing deep for him in that area. He fell in love with me and I fell in love with him and it was very real…

“I have to say in retrospect that he tried so hard and went through a lot with me. He had never done that with any other woman or with anyone that we went through. We would argue, three day arguments… I have to say I admire that he really gave a good chance”.

Starting in 2001, the couple broke up, but then Michael called his ex-wife out of the blue in 2005 with an emotional cry for help.

Lisa Marie said: “He wanted to tell me that I was right about a lot of people around him. Which turned out to be exactly what he and I had talked about years ago. He asked me if I still loved him and I told him he was indifferent. And he didn’t like that word and cried…”

She later accepted that she had said it to hurt him and to try to break a connection that was difficult and upsetting for her. Lisa Marie believed that he had not loved her enough to fight for her marriage. But when he died, she realized agonizingly that she had been wrong.

Asked if she now believed her ex-husband had truly loved her, she added: “I think so, sadly. I think…yes. When we were together, we were really in love.”
