Mercedes forced into an awkward situation by Red Bull and De Vries at the Mexican GP

De Vries took over from Lewis Hamilton to open free practice at the French Grand Prix and will replace George Russell for the equivalent session in Mexico. It is mandatory for teams to give their young designated driver two starts in FP1 throughout the season after new rules were introduced for 2022.
Despite being classified as a “young driver”, De Vries has a wealth of experience having won the Formula 2 and Formula E championships in 2019 and 2021 respectively.
He made a big impression on his F1 debut by coming home in ninth place, replacing Alex Albon at Williams at the Italian Grand Prix, and contributing two points for the team.
