Max Verstappen laughs at George Russell after the news of the Mercedes star

Max Verstappen laughed at George Russell after the Mercedes star admitted he slept on the plane after winning his first Grand Prix. Russell made the admission alongside Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo at the press conference ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

He commented: “I think there were quite a few of us on that flight. There were Carlos (Sainz), myself, Charles (Leclerc), Pierre (Gasly), Kevin (Magnussen), Fernando (Alonso), Esteban (Ocon), Lewis (Hamilton). All of you have been lost.

“I think there were so many emotions on Sunday night. Talking to all of you afterwards and the celebrations with the team. So everyone was in a bit of a rush to get to the airport. The flight didn’t take off until 3 in the morning and I was absolutely knackered.”

Verstappen interrupted while giving details of what other drivers were saying about Russell’s trip.

He added: “It’s something I’ve worked for all my life and what you dream about as a kid. My years in Formula One you dream of that moment. Going into every race believing you can do it, but sometimes realizing very early on a weekend that it won’t be possible.

“The stars seemed to align that weekend and the race on Sunday was perfect. Coming out with maximum points was quite special.” However, the 25-year-old admitted that victory hadn’t affected him when asked at the press conference if he would make him a different driver.

Russell explained: “No, I don’t think they are hornets. I always believed that I could achieve victories and you believe that you can become a world champion. Certainly confidence is huge and morale within the team is booming, but I don’t feel transformed overnight. I still feel like the same driver I was this time a week ago.”
