Man Utd’s expensive trend highlights a worrying issue for Erik ten Hag

The FA has accused Manchester United of breaching rule E20.1 for the second time in three games following Saturday’s draw against Chelsea. Several United players surrounded Stuart Attwell to furiously dispute his late penalty decision after Armando Broja was brought down by Scott McTominay in the box.

The United players were the ones who celebrated full time, but their reaction to the penalty decision has not gone unpunished. On Thursday, the FA confirmed that it had charged the Red Devils over Erik ten Hag’s players allegedly not behaving in an “orderly” manner.

Just a week later, United were handed another FA charge for an E20.1 breach after harassing referee Craig Pawson in their 0–0 draw against Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo thought Newcastle had taken a free kick before stealing the ball from Nick Pope and apparently scoring the opening goal.

After Pawson clarified that the visitors had not yet taken the free kick, the United players charged his address in numbers to discuss the Ronaldo case. Two similar instances in the space of a week could challenge Ten Hag’s control over his players, with disciplinary incidents piling up.
