Man Utd urged snubbing of Gakpo for Sancho, Martial and Rashford

Gakpo has been in impressive form for PSV in recent years, making him a target for a host of Premier League clubs. He was heavily linked with a move to Southampton or Leeds over the summer, but an impressive season that has seen him score nine times and produce a further 12 assists has caused teams further up the table to seriously consider a move.

He has been one of the best players for the Netherlands at the World Cup so far, scoring twice for Louis van Gaal as his team top Group A after two games. His performances in Qatar have only intensified talks about his future, with United being the club most linked with a move for his services.

However, Red Devils legend Teddy Sheringham has argued that the club does not need him as he is too similar to Martial, Rashford and Sancho, suggesting an outright number 9 should be the priority.

The Portugal captain issued a statement following the confirmation of the decision, highlighting his love for the club despite the circumstances of his departure.

“Following discussions with Manchester United, we have mutually agreed to terminate our contract early,” he wrote. “I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never change. However, I feel the time is right to look for a new challenge.”

“I wish the team every success for the rest of the season and for the future.”

Whether or not United will make a bid for Gakpo to replace the outgoing leader remains to be seen, but Sheringham’s advice may ring in their ears as they weigh making an offer.
