Man Utd star Antony responds to Paul Scholes after ‘clown’ comment

Manchester United striker Antony has responded with a defiant message after club icon Paul Scholes called him a “clown” on Thursday night. Antony drew massive criticism for showing off his signature skill move as United drew 0-0 with Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League.

Known for his flair and creativity with the ball at his feet, as is often the case with Brazilian wingers, the 22-year-old pulled off his trademark first-half 360-degree turn at Old Trafford. He then passed his through ball to Casemiro, resulting in a goal kick from FC Sheriff and plenty of buzz on social media and from Robbie Savage in the comments.

After the match, Scholes and fellow former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves were unimpressed by Antony’s decision to put himself on display at that stage of the match, more so due to the outcome of his passing attempt. Scholes went so far as to call the number 21 a ‘clown’ for his antics, telling BT Sport: “I’m not even sure it’s skill, right? [talking to Owen Hargreaves] Do that?

“Is it his trademark? I think he needs a better one. He needs to find a more entertaining way. I don’t think this country likes to see that. Any country, even Brazil? Brazil doesn’t want to see that.” , TRUE? Ajax, in Holland, do you want to see that? I like to see skill, but I don’t think it’s skill or entertainment. That’s just being a clown, isn’t it?

On Friday, Antony responded to his critics with a struggling Instagram post, insisting that he will not stop being the player who helped him get to one of the biggest clubs in the world. “We are known for our art and I will not stop doing what got me where I am!” Anthony wrote.

Erik ten Hag will be used to the Brazilian’s antics down the right flank and was keen to take them to Old Trafford, sanctioning his £85m arrival in the summer. And in his post-match press conference, Ten Hag explained that he is happy that Antony lights up the pitch skillfully when the time is right to do so.
