Benjamin Sesko was heavily linked with joining United before RB Leipzig swooped in to agree a deal for the highly-skilled young striker, while Erling Haaland, Dayot Upamecano and Antoine Griezmann all slipped through their fingers in recent years. Finishing outside the top four in three of the last six seasons has cost them dearly and Ten Hag’s task will be, like his predecessors, to return the club to the top of the English pyramid.
United’s current manager insists he is hoping to challenge for league titles in two years’ time. But they cannot afford to miss major transfer targets in the future or risk losing contact with Arsenal, Newcastle, Manchester City and Liverpool, among others.
Rabiot may not have been a game-changing signing for United for this season. But his statement that United were not the “best option” for him should set off alarm bells for the Glazers that they are once again the only option.
