Keane had it all during his time at Manchester United, becoming one of the first names on Ferguson’s team sheet in the process.
The Republic of Ireland international was a grumpy presence in midfield but, in reality, he was much more than that.
Keane could pass, he could shoot, he could run the show. United were successful under him, with the 51-year-old helping the club win seven Premier League titles, as well as the Champions League in 1999, although he missed the final.
For years, however, the Red Devils have lacked that type of player.
As brilliant as Michael Carrick was when he moved on from Tottenham as Keane’s replacement, he was never quite the same. Certainly he was more of a Paul Scholes than the England midfielder’s former teammate.
Manchester United transfers: Plans for next three signings are damning for Solskjaer
Anderson brought flair under Ferguson, in his prime, while Tom Cleverley never became the player the Scot thought he would be for United, even if he has had a fine run at Watford in the years since.
Since Ferguson’s departure, United have signed the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek.
However, neither member of the quintet has shown signs of being a Keane-like presence in the middle of the park.
Recently, however, Casemiro has started to live up to his blockbuster billing.
The Brazilian international was signed by United in the summer once they admitted their three-month search for Frenkie de Jong would be in vain.

Ten Hag makes £40m transfer decision at Man Utd
Casemiro has had to be patient during his brief spell at Old Trafford, as he was initially trailing Scott McTominay in the Ten Hag pecking order.
But certainly the 30-year-old has shown that the wait has been worth it.
Casemiro has come to the fore, becoming a menacing presence in midfield with some pundits even labeling him a “monster”.
The former Real Madrid star offers United’s creative players such as Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes far more protection than any of his team-mates.
And as a player who is a warrior in midfield, as well as someone who can contribute the important goal, it looks like he is finally the Keane successor the club has been waiting for.

Only time will tell if he is capable of achieving the same success as his role model, with whom he shared a hug before his presentation.
On Saturday night, Casemiro scored a crucial equalizer for United that secured a point at Chelsea.
The samba star headed in the 94th minute from a Jorginho penalty that seemed to have given Chelsea the three points.
And Ten Hag praised the midfielder after the game, saying: “That’s why we brought him in, we know he’s capable of doing that.
“He showed it in Spain, in the Champions League, at the highest level. So he could do it in the Premier League too.

“He needed a short period to adjust to that, and now from game to game you see him grow and how important he is to our game.
“He offers serenity, organization, and also when he scores a goal, you bring a lot to a team.”
Casemiro hopes to start when United take on the Sheriff on Thursday.
The Red Devils beat the same opponents earlier in the season, with Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo on target in a 2-0 victory.
