Man Utd ‘can terminate Ronaldo’s contract’ and prevent him from leaving

Manchester United may terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan. The striker has spoken about his discontent at the club and that he felt key figures were trying to force him out, despite reports that he pushed to leave over the summer.

Ronaldo was heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford before the start of the season, with his agent Jorge Mendes holding talks with various clubs to sound out potential opportunities. However, players like Chelsea and Bayern Munich did not come with offers.

Although Portugal international Ronaldo believes he is being thrown out the door, he also reveals that he has no respect for manager Erik ten Hag because he “doesn’t respect him”, just a week after the Dutchman handed him the captain’s armband. With the World Cup in Qatar on the horizon, the Red Devils have up to six weeks to decide how they want to approach the situation with their number 7.

football lawyer david seligman believes United could terminate Ronaldo’s contract but prevent him from joining another team if they feel their relationship with the player is beyond repair and he has breached the terms of his agreement. He tweeted: “Man United would likely have grounds to terminate Ronaldo’s contract: material breach of implied duty of trust, as well as express terms about bringing the club into disrepute.

“FIFA’s rules and jurisprudence on player registration are not that simple. United could terminate the contract but retain the player’s registration for compensation purposes if the termination is caused by Ronaldo’s conduct.”

After Ronaldo stormed out of the Theater of Dreams before the final whistle against Tottenham, Ten Hag managed to handle the situation well and brought the 37-year-old back to the team quickly. However, this issue is significantly more explosive and there is a high risk of significantly altering United’s dressing room if this interview is missed.

Ronaldo also spoke about how people at the club are preventing the team from returning to its glory days, which will no doubt have ruffled feathers internally. He explained: “But you have some things inside that don’t help [us] reaching the top level like City, Liverpool and even now Arsenal… a club of this size should be at the top of the tree in my opinion and unfortunately they are not.

“As Picasso said, you have to destroy it to rebuild it and if they start with me, it’s not a problem for me. I love Manchester United, I love the fans, they are always on my side. But if they want to do it differently… they have to change many, many things.”
