Man Utd boss Ten Hag explains Garnacho’s bench for Fulham clash

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has spoken about his decision to bench Alejandro Garnacho for today’s Premier League clash with Fulham. The 18-year-old shone after coming on in his side’s 4-2 win over Aston Villa on Thursday. However, Anthony Elanga leaves before him for this afternoon’s showdown in West London.

Manchester United have come on strong and look to beat Fulham today in their last game before the World Cup kicks off in Qatar.

David De Gea is back in goal, with the Spain international being passed over by Martin Dubravka for his side’s win over Villa on Thursday.

Tyrell Malacia comes on for Diogo Dalot at right back, with Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw also selected.

In midfield, United have gone with a trident made up of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes.

And, above, Elanga starts alongside Marcus Rashford and Marcus Rashford.

Garnacho, meanwhile, has been named to the bench with the likes of Dubravka, Nathan Bishop, Harry Maguire, Fred, Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay and Zidane Iqbal.

In a separate interview before the game, Ten Hag revealed how he was helping Garnacho reach his potential behind the scenes.

“First of all, there is a time when you bring players in, they have to go through the process in training,” he said.

“You work all day with them and then in games, you assess him and think about what he potentially has.

“You know, when you bring him to games, he has to be ready and you know when you bring him his potential will accelerate.

“That’s what we’re looking at right now. [with Garnacho]. Since the beginning of the season, he has made a lot of progress.

“When we brought him in, he did very well and of course there is a lot we have to work on.”

Meanwhile, talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino praised Garnacho and the way he applies himself on the pitch, insisting he has what it takes to be a regular in the team.

“Garnacho is ready to challenge anyone in that line of attack,” he said.

“He’s so tenacious, he’s terrorizing the full-backs, he wants to get past people.

“He does something that very few wingers can do brilliantly, and that is cross a defender’s line and try to get behind them, and then the defender just freaks out.

“All he wants to do is get into a position where he can help someone or try to score himself, which he ultimately did.

“He is dangerous and he is defending himself to play for the Man United team now.”

He added: “If you look at Jadon Sancho and where he is and how he has played, I have seen more Garnacho this season in 45 minutes than I have seen Sancho since he has been at United.

“Sancho was brought to the club to get to the back lines, get to dangerous areas of the field and make defenders uncomfortable, get goals and assists, and he hasn’t done that.

“Garnacho is hungry and hungry, he seems like an angry child at times, he wants to be very direct, and that fits very well with what United need at the moment.

“He has everything.”
