‘M3GAN is much greater than the sum of its recycled parts’ – review

A clip of the ultimate movie-mad robot dancing down a hallway before killing someone with a makeshift machete has already gone viral. While the trailer is precisely designed to push the buttons of the social media generation, the movie is an older affair. It’s a horror camp that effectively combines the thrills of the terrifying Child’s Play doll movie and the killer android movie The Terminator.

Set in the very near future, Gemma (Allison Williams) is trying to juggle her job as a designer of robotic toys and her role as the neglectful guardian of her recently orphaned nine-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw).

With a deadline looming to present his new project to his slimy boss (Ronny Chieng), he finds a way to kill two birds with one proverbial. His latest creation is an eerily realistic artificial intelligence doll that will not only keep children calm but take care of parenting chores. M3GAN (Amie Donald in a latex mask) can sing a soothing ballad, help with homework, and nag kids to flush.

Unfortunately, Gemma was unable to insert a morality chip before pairing the prototype with her traumatized niece. When her neighbor’s dog bites the girl, M3GAN starts buzzing with murderous intent.

We know full well where this is heading from the start, and screenwriters James Wan (The Conjuring) and Akela Cooper (Malignant) play off our expectations with a knowing wink.

They may have borrowed heavily from previous films, but their clever script makes M3GAN so much greater than the sum of its recycled parts.
