Luther: The Fallen Sun just hit theaters, but it almost wasn’t done with the cast that fans have now seen. Andy Serkis stars as the malevolent David Robey, a mastermind who may ultimately be the match for Idris Elba’s no-nonsense detective. Serkis, best known for playing Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies, explained how Robey became one of his most difficult roles yet, and even toyed with the idea of turning down the film from Netflix.
Serkis said on Good Morning Britain: “It was one of the darkest roles I’ve ever been offered and I almost considered not doing it. The brilliant thing about Neil Cross and the writing is that it makes Luther’s villains [us].”
He described the character and the threat hanging over Luther as “very, very real, just around the corner, under the bed.”
“It’s in our lives,” Serkis continued. “This one in particular is about the horror that is the internet. The power of the internet and someone like David Robey, the character I play, manipulates people using that. He’s a master of surveillance, he’s used to manipulating people, he’s He’s sort of a people watcher because he can’t connect with humanity and so he watches them… It’s very scary and Neil Cross’s writing is brilliant at doing that.”
Despite the fear Serkis felt playing his terrifying tech villain, it hasn’t stopped him from reaching for his phone every day.
“And that’s the thing,” he defended. “We’re all addicted, that’s the point! We’ve become slaves to [phones].”
Although Serkis has been struggling with his character’s morality, Luther’s star Elba has been enthusiastic about his own.
He recently told Total Film (Via radio schedules) how he compared the model of The Fallen Sun to that of a James Bond movie.
“It’s not a competition,” Elba said. “But I’m talking about Bond as a model for the type of film we’re looking for. John is a main character in a film in which he is the hero. That’s the comparison I’m making.”
He said his “ambition” was to give Luther’s first film “that kind of scale”.
Elba continued, “I want people to go, ‘Ooh! Luther, the first movie? Wicked.’ And continue with that. And then maybe later on, when he’s too old, someone else will step in to play John.” .
Luther: The Fallen Sun is in theaters now and hits Netflix on March 10.
