Looking to get into Pokemon cards? Expert tips to get started

Pokémon is one of the most popular video game franchises in the world, which has a wide variety of offspring and memorabilia to collect. One of the most popular collectibles is the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which has been around for almost as long as Nintendo’s own games. The Pokémon Trading Card Game began in 1996 with nearly 200 total games released since then, as well as thousands of cards produced.

With such a huge variety of trading cards available, you may not know where to start.

If you’re having trouble getting your Pokémon trading card collection off the ground, Kevin Aloë, eBay’s Collectible Trading Card Games Category Manager, has some pro tips.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Aloë recommended that your first purchase come down to whether you plan to be a collector or a gamer.

If you plan on playing primarily, you’ll want to start with a starter deck, with the premade ones. available on ebay.

He said: “Are you a gamer or a collector? Whether a player starts by creating their own starter deck, or finds a pre-made deck on eBay where decks can be found for under £10. Play it, see if you like how it plays, learn from your game and from there you can either replace some of the cards with stronger cards or go with a different deck, maybe even one you played against.

“If you’re a collector, you need to find what speaks to you. Some collectors want to complete a set like the ‘Base Set’ and have all the cards. Others focus on a favorite Pokémon, like Charizard, Pikachu, or Bulbasaur and get all the different cards from the last 25 years. You can also have a draw for Holos, Vmax, or go for something very specialized like Misprints. One of the most common ways is to follow your heart and buy the cards you love.

“If you don’t know where to start, look for work lots on eBay or buy someone else’s collection.

“Alternatively, buy some packs or an elite trainer box and open the pack. Opening the pack and find out what you can get and get some gems is a very exciting experience. The latest set ‘Last Origin’ or the next set ‘Silver Tempest’ ‘ are good options. See what kinds of cards you like, learn about them, and then look to build your collection from there.”

In terms of what you set out to start with, you need to follow your heart and choose the one that appeals to you the most.

There’s probably a specific set that catches your eye if you’re a fan of gaming and there’s a particular generation you love.

But if that’s not the case, go for the latest set.

Aloë said: “For a collector, it depends on what you’re looking for. If you had the base set when you were younger, then the base set can bring back some fantastic childhood memories. But those can be expensive, so alternatively, you can go for the edition of reprints that have that same nostalgia but are more affordable.

“The ‘2016 XY: Evolutions’ and ‘2021 Celebrations’ would be my recommendation.

“The younger generations may have started their journey later, so if you’ve played one of the games, find a setting in this setting. For example, Neodestiny is very popular for people who grew up with the second generation of games.

“In the current era, that is, ‘The Last 11 Sets’, it is based on the game ‘2019 Sword & Shield’. The ‘Evolving Skies’ set is particularly popular in the Sword and Shield era. This brings me to that last point If you are not sure where to start, there is much merit in starting with the last set.

“You’ll find a lot of discussions about it to help you get in and learn about it.

“There is no wrong set, but there is merit in looking for a popular set because you can find a lot of people in the community to trade with.

“So find a set you like. Get a Job Bundle or some ‘Elite Trainer Box’ and you’ve started your journey of learning about your cards and joining the community.”

Aloë has also advised Express.co.uk on How to make money with pokemon trading cards.

If you’re lucky, you can make a big profit, as Pokemon cards in the past have sold for millions of pounds.
