Liverpool star Darwin Nunez misses open goal from six yards

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez missed an open goal in the Reds’ Champions League match against Ajax. The Uruguayan had a chance to double his team’s lead just before half-time, but he squandered it.

Liverpool had been under pressure for most of the first half with Ajax missing two good chances of their own to open the scoring. However, the Reds had gone ahead through Mohamed Salah in the 42nd minute.

Almost immediately afterwards, the Liverpool attack resurfaced as Roberto Firmino boxed the ball for Nunez, who simply should have touched an open goal from six yards out. Inexplicably, the 23-year-old managed to hit the post with his left foot leaving his team with more work to do in the second half.

His teammates were left in a state of disbelief after the miss with harsh words probably being said in the locker room at halftime.

However, Núñez more than made up for his mistake five minutes into the second half, heading in from Andy Robertson’s corner to double his team’s lead. Harvey Elliott scored a third moments later to almost secure Liverpool’s qualification for the Champions League round of 16.

Nunez has yet to fully impress since arriving at Anfield, but he has shown flashes of what he is capable of. He has scored an admirable six goals in his first 12 games in all competitions, his all-around game has left a lot to be desired and his arrival seems to have somewhat stifled Salah’s attacking output.

The striker missed the weekend’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest through injury but returned straight to the team in Amsterdam.
