Liverpool players’ ratings as two stars disappointed Jurgen Klopp vs Forest

Liverpool lacked power and paid the ultimate price for their toothless display on the banks of the River Trent as Nottingham Forest secured a rare 1-0 win as Jurgen Klopp’s side’s early-season struggles continue. The Reds hoped they had finally turned the corner after back-to-back 1-0 wins over Manchester City and West Ham, but the attacking threat of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota was sorely missed.

Mohamed Salah barely threatened is an incredibly disappointing personal display as Liverpool lacked a ruthless streak in front of goal.

They had plenty of notable chances, most notably from Fabio Carvalho and Virgil van Dijk in the first half, but this was a day Liverpool never really seemed to score.

Joe Gomez cost his team dearly when he gave away a cheap ball after turning the ball over and Forest punished with the resulting free kick when former Liverpool leader Taiwo Awoniyi fired in the rebound after initially hitting the post.

Express Sport rates the Liverpool players on a miserable afternoon for Klopp’s side, who look poised to lose more ground in the race for the top four…

Allison – 8

He made two clever saves in the first half to deny Cheikhou Kouyate and Jesse Lingard. He could not criticize the goal. He couldn’t do much more. He kept the score low with a superb save from Ryan Yates.

James Milner – 7

Robust once again from the veteran. He makes some tempting deliveries, also gets past the ball several times. One of Liverpool’s best players. Incredible block to deny

Joe Gomez – 5

Lack of the initial goal. He fell asleep and fouled Awoniyi, who later scored the first goal from the resulting free kick. He still looks a bit shaky at times, revealing unnecessary faults.

Virgil van Dijk – 6

Three of Liverpool’s best chances fell to the great defender but he was unable to seize them. He should have been on goal in the first half when he headed across but the ball slipped past Roberto Firmino.

He then deflected wide from a Trent Alexander-Arnold free kick before Dean Henderson was forced to make an excellent low save from Van Dijk’s header from a corner. He will be kicking himself.

andy robertson – 7

Solid performance down the left, didn’t do much wrong. He advanced well but the link with Fabio Carvalho was missing. Great cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold that forced a good save from Dean Henderson.

Fabinho – 6

It was not a great afternoon for the Brazilian. He didn’t stamp his authority in the midfield battle. This season has not been up to par.

Curtis-Jones – 6

Quiet display on his return to action. He ticked things off but did not threaten or create. You need to do more if you want to get to this level. It can’t be too hard as he hasn’t played much football this season due to injury.

Harvey Elliott – 7

Bright spark for the Reds buzzing over the pitch. Always probing and seeking to create. Still missing a cut edge. He had a shot on goal but comfortable for Dean Henderson.

Fabio Carvalho – 6

He controlled brilliantly but could not make a clear chance in the first half. Moments of promise, but he still looks a bit nervous and shy on the pitch.

Mohammed Salah – 5

It looked like he may have sustained a serious injury when he fell unchallenged, but he was fine in the end. He lost ball flight in the second half when he could have controlled in the area. Really poor display, he barely got into the game. He scraped a shot in the first half and had a late header wide.

Roberto Firmino – 6

Headed wide from a corner in the first half, maybe he could have done better. Pretty quiet, but he tried to dig in and make things happen at least. Substitute for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Substitutes

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7

Jordan Henderson – 6
