Lewis Hamilton makes grim prediction despite new updates

Lewis Hamilton has lowered expectations of a Mercedes revival despite Silver Arrows bringing new upgrades for the United States Grand Prix. The German manufacturer has confirmed a number of aerodynamic improvements for the weekend in a bid to close the gap to Max Verstappen and Red Bull.

However, Hamilton has revealed that he was not overly optimistic about success despite the new changes. The seven-time champion said he was “open-minded” but that he had learned lessons from previous weekends, where new parts failed to deliver performance gains.

Speaking at the press conference, Hamilton said: “You can expect us to try everything like we always do. I do not want to get my hopes up. Naturally, a lot of work has gone into the update, as it always does, and I’m very, very proud of everyone for the work done.

“But in the past we had expectations, ‘oh, this will bring in a tenth,’ and then we struggled to extract that.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff admitted further improvements from the new team would not change their fortunes overnight. However, he has stressed that there is hope that he can bring the manufacturer “one step closer” to the challenge.

This was backed up by track engineering director Andrew Shovlin, who confirmed that the new parts would also help the team for the upcoming season.

Speaking before the weekend, he explained: “It’s our final step of aerodynamic development and we hope it will give us a bit more performance, but the most important thing is that with each step we are learning more and more, and that learning we can take to the next year”. – So that’s part of it.

“Also, there are a few parts where we’ve removed some weight from the components which will hopefully bring the car closer to the weight limit.” [the minimum permitted being 798kg].”
