Kevin Bacon hated not being recognized in public after anonymity test

This week, on Friday, November 25, 2022, Disney Plus will launch the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special. The film follows Peter Quill tracking down Kevin Bacon in real life on Earth after becoming obsessed with Footloose as a child. Bacon was probably pleased to be recognized by Star-Lord, as he previously confessed that he enjoyed being seen in public and hated anonymity.

Bacon appeared on The Graham Norton Show in 2017, where he admitted to these feelings while sitting next to Jessica Chastain and Diane Keaton. During the interview, she was asked about his fame, as he has been a notable figure in the public eye since his Hollywood debut in 1978 at National Lampoon’s Animal House.

Since then, he has become internationally famous with such hit movies as Footloose, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Tremors to name a few.

However, Bacon confessed that being anonymous was not something he enjoyed at all. “I’ll tell you,” he said. “People don’t talk about the fact that being recognizable is 99.9 percent good, because people are nice to you all day, for no reason!”

He noted that people regularly “stopped him on the street” to say “Kevin, I love you!” And he added: “I mean, who doesn’t want to be loved. Right? Who doesn’t want someone to say ‘I love you’?”

Bacon went on to explain some of the advantages of being internationally known and appreciated. The star of the EE ad said: “It’s a great feeling, and you can get out of tickets, they’ll give you free sneakers and stuff like that. It’s mostly good, that’s my point.”

However, curiosity got the better of him. He continued: “Every once in a while, you think to yourself, what would it be like to walk the world anonymously?” With that thought, he carried out an experiment. He hired some special effects makeup artists from Hollywood to completely change his face. With prosthetics and facial skin, flesh, and hair, he looked completely different. Then he went out.

“I went to an outdoor mall in Los Angeles called The Grove,” he recalled. “And it’s the worst place you want to walk if you’re a celebrity. It’s a guaranteed place to take some selfies.”

Head down, he said: “I walked straight through The Grove and no one recognized me. And it was horrible.” Bacon laughed: “I thought, this sucks, I’m going to get back to Kevin Bacon ASAP!”

Bacon recently looked back on Footloose and the legacy it has cultivated since its release in 1984. Speaking with The Today Show’s Willie Geist, he said of the iconic ’80s film: “I love it.”

He continued: “I think it’s great. It’s like all those things where you think, ‘Oh my gosh, is this ever going to go away?’ At a certain point, you have to embrace the beast. I think it was a great gift to be a part of that movie.”

Recalling his attempt to break into the industry as a “real” actor, he added: “I certainly took it very seriously when I was doing it and I love that people still come up and say they showed it to their kids.” .”

Most recently, Kenny Loggins’ song Footloose became a viral dance trend on TikTok, joined by Bacon and his wife, Kyra Sedgwick.
