John Travolta stars in Pulp Fiction tonight on Channel 4 at 10pm, but long before he became murderous Vincent Vega in Quentin Tarantino’s action flick, the American star played Danny Zuko in the 1978 musical Grease. The 1950s film starred him and the iconic Olivia Newton-John, but she only joined the picture after he relentlessly offered her the part. And once she joined, the sexual tension was undeniable.
Newton-John recalled her joining Grease in casual style in 2012. She recalled: “[Travolta] he was so sweet and nice, and i was so nervous about doing a movie and he convinced me that yes, i should do a screen test. We did the screen test and it was great and here we are.”
However, Travolta remembers things very differently. After playing Danny in the stage show Grease for years, she knew who she wanted to play Sandy in the movie version of the musical. “There is only one person who should play this role,” she told the producers. “And it’s Olivia Newton-John…She’s every man’s dream.”
Newton-John wasn’t initially sold on Travolta’s advances, but once they got together, things began to progress quickly.
The actress recalled wistfully: “I walked out onto the street to be greeted by those piercing blue eyes and the warmest smile on the planet. In person, John Travolta radiates pure joy and love. That day he greeted me with a big hug as if we were already there.” lifelong”. friends. How could you say no to John Travolta?
Eventually, Newton-John agreed to join the film, but he had a stipulation. “First I have to see myself in a screen test,” he told Travolta.
He later said, “I was very aware of my limitations, so I didn’t want to broach it and make a fool of myself.” At the time, Newton-John was an extremely famous singer-songwriter. His music had even been covered by George Harrison of The Beatles.
But when Travolta set up the screen test, he had a specific challenge for her. “I had to talk her into doing You’re The One That I Want,” she recalled. “That’s the big twist to her character.”
While she was initially nervous to take on this big final number, she pleased herself, and Grease’s bosses, with her performance. She agreed to join the film and began filming a short time later.
However, things continued to heat up between the two actors.
It is true that Travolta was attracted to Newton-John. He noted that the attraction to him even bled out on the filming of the movie.
He said: “I think you saw it in You’re the One That I Want. It almost resolves that tension there.”
Newton-John also agreed: “Yes, we really liked each other and there was an attraction.”
Despite their constant attraction to each other, the couple broke up after filming wrapped. They both married different people and the rumors of their romance were never confirmed.
Travolta’s love for Newton-John continued until his death last year.
Newton-John died of cancer on August 8, 2022, at age 73. The following month a “small and very private” memorial service was held in California.
Travolta issued a statement just after the announcement of Newton-John’s death. He wrote: “My dearest Olivia, you made our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you in the future and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever!”
