JK Rowling on two Harry Potter characters in ‘angriest fan debate’

Rowling continued: “There is a great appeal, and I try to show this in the Potter books, for black and white thinking. It’s the easiest place to be, and in many ways, it’s the safest place to be. If you take an all or nothing position on anything, you will definitely find comrades, you will easily find a community: ‘I have sworn allegiance to this simple idea.’

“What I have tried to show in the Potter books and what I myself feel very strongly: we should be more suspicious of ourselves when we are confident and we should question ourselves more when we get an adrenaline rush from doing or saying something.”

It was then that the creator of Harry Potter spoke of the conflict she has had with fans over the morality of two characters in particular.

The author shared: “It struck me early on in the Potter phenomenon how the two characters that caused the most furious debate – and I’m actually using the word ‘furious’ literally sometimes – were Dumbledore and Snape. People wanted Dumbledore to be perfect. He is deeply flawed. For me, he is an example of kindness. He did wrong, he learned, he became wise. But he has to make the tough decisions that he has to make people in the real world. Very difficult decisions.”
