Jamie Carragher left red-faced in late live TV appearance

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was left red-faced after arriving late for CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage on Tuesday. The broadcast was live from New York on a special show, as Carragher was to sit alongside Thierry Henry and Micah Richards, but he left the duo in the lurch when he had to apologize for his timing.

Host Kate Abdo joked with Carragher as the pundits sat down for their broadcast. “And look who has come to the studio”, Abdo said. “So kind of you to join us, Jamie Carragher, a little late, but better late than never.”

The Sky Sports man then began speaking without picking up his microphone as the audience couldn’t hear his response, before Abdo motioned for him to take the microphone. “So it was a little difficult to get through passport control,” Carragher replied. “I really don’t know [why]maybe it’s criticism, maybe [Christian] Pulisic’s dad was the guy who made the passports.

“I don’t know, I gave him a bit of a stick, right? You’re the warm-up act, but the main man is here now. That was the warm up, get the crowd going, let’s get the mood up.”

Carragher has criticized Pulisic on the US broadcast before, claiming he is “not good enough” to play for Chelsea. “Do you think he’s not playing for Thomas Tuchel or for himself?” Carragher said last month.

“I don’t think he’s good enough to play for Chelsea. I think he has been there for a few years. I think he has had enough opportunities. I don’t think a new coach will completely rejuvenate him…he will play week after week. I just think he’s a player in the Chelsea squad no matter who’s the manager.”

Henry and Richards were competing in an outdoor drill with former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel when Carragher showed up to join the team. Richards and Henry pointed into the distance before the former Reds defender emerged and Richards gave him a big hug.

“Now I’m back!” Carragher said when he greeted the rest of the experts. “So what are we talking about, [Erling] Halland? Schmeichel scoffed at Carragher. “First of all, I know what you are going to say,” said the former goalkeeper. “The only way to stop Haaland is to kick him, and you are an expert.”

Carragher said he used to try that tactic when facing Henry and Arsenal, but it didn’t work against the Frenchman. When word spread on social media that Carragher had arrived on set, he took Twitter to respond with a GIF from The Office UK of Ricky Gervais as David Brent singing P!nk’s song ‘Get The Party Started’.
