Henry Cavill fans were devastated when he walked away from his hit Netflix deal on The Witcher. But at least he still had Superman, they thought, after he returned to the role in a thrilling post-credits cameo in Black Adam. And then new DC Warner Bros boss James Gunn revealed that he was ditching Cavill’s Man of Steel for a new, younger incarnation. The actor has always been very open about his hopes of playing James Bond, and he suddenly seemed very available to take on the role recently explosively vacated by Daniel Craig. Two bad news quickly followed when a new favorite outperformed all others.
Bond producers Barbara Broccoli, daughter of the legendary ‘Cubby’, and her half-brother Michael G Wilson have recently begun revealing and teasing plans for the next incarnation of the British spy.
Broccoli publicly stated that the next Bond would be a British male actor. It was also reported that production company EON was only looking for male actors who were under the age of 40 and over 5’10 in height. The actor would have to be suitable to fit the projected ten years in the role.
Cavill is a stocky 6 foot tall. However, the former Superman has a big problem: he, too, is about to turn 40 this year in May. Given that production on the new Bond reboot is highly unlikely to begin before next year, he looks like he’s aging out of the running. Similarly, another former heavy favorite, Tom Hardy, will turn 46 in September.
One report claimed, “Aaron has so impressed the bosses that he’s filmed one of the franchise’s famous gun barrel teaser scenes, something every actor does. That move brings him one step closer to signing a deal.”
The news was followed by the star raising the odds, crushing previous favorites in his wake.
Coral’s John Hill told Express Online: “Aaron Taylor-Johnson has moved ahead of the likes of Henry Cavill, Regé-Jane Page and Tom Hardy as the new favorite to become the next James Bond after strong support in our bets. It’s the first time that neither Cavill, Page or Hardy have been the favorites in our bets to replace Daniel Craig since early 2021.”
Taylor-Johnson is perfectly poised to step in after a long and elegant career. She rose to fame in the title role of the 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy when she was 18 years old. The actor subsequently began a relationship with his director Sam Taylor-Wood, 42, and the couple married in 2012.
The actor will also make his 2023 debut in the lead role in Sony’s upcoming Spider-verse blockbuster Kraven The Hunter.
Meanwhile, Cavill has already announced a major new deal with Amazon Studios to bring Warhammer to the screen with a first-look rejection guarantee on any other adaptation of the game.
