The estate of James Bond creator Ian Fleming said last night it would approve a rewrite of his famous politically incorrect novels.
His series of postwar spy novels is riddled with misogynist and racist references that have fallen out of favor with the sensitivity police.
Although he died in 1964 at the age of 56, his estate said the decision to rewrite his set of novels was made with “the author’s own guidance”, citing Fleming’s previous thoughts on undertaking such revisions.
His books, the first of which was Royal Casino Released in 1953, it paved the way for secret agent 007 to cross over to the big screen and become one of the biggest movie franchises in history.
From doctor not Marking the agent’s big screen debut in 1962, the spy has been portrayed by actors Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.
Fleming’s estate noted that the Eton-educated author had fully supported Al Hart, editor of his US imprint Macmillan, when it was suggested that passages in Fleming’s 1954 book be removed or altered. Live and Let Die before its publication in the United States a year later.
The statement said that “the world was a very different place than it is now” when Fleming sat down to write his second James Bond novel.
He added: “Some of these fixed minor factual errors. Others deleted or changed passages or words [Hart] they felt they were racially concerning, even then.
“Fleming approved all the changes and the version of Live and Let Die in America was therefore different from the British edition, and it appears from his letters that Fleming preferred the American version.
All of the author’s thrillers featuring 007 will be reissued in April to commemorate 70 years since Royal Casinothe first book in the series was published.
Ian Fleming Publications Ltd, the company that owns the literary rights to the author’s work, commissioned a revision of the classic texts under their control and decided to make a number of changes to align their work with accepted thinking on social morality, values, the and standards.
