Inside Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger’s close friendship

Heath Ledger’s experience working with Jake Gyllenhaal was incredible. “Wonderful,” he said of his co-star in a 2005 MovieWeb interview. “I couldn’t have asked for a better person. He comes from a beautiful family and is a wonderful actor.” However, it wasn’t “Brokeback Mountain” that made them so close in the first place, it was due to their string of failed auditions for Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge.”
“When Ewan was cast, I finally met Heath and we became friends before Brokeback Mountain based on our mutual frustration,” Gyllenhaal said. Australia in 2018. “When Brokeback Mountain came out and got all the attention it got, I remember, a few months later, Heath called me and said: [affects Ledger impersonation] ‘Hello friend, I have some news for you.’ I said that?’ He said: ‘Baz has just offered me his next film. I just wanted you to know that I turned it down! [Laughs heartily] So that was how much Heath loved me, you know. That’s how I met him.”
And when it came to working together, Gyllenhaal said the experience was “really deep and fun.” He said vanity fair that, during that time, the relationship between them was “based on a deep love for many people we knew and who raised us in our lives”, adding that having “a deep respect for their love and their relationship” was something they had in common.
