It’s been five years since Johnny Depp last played Captain Jack Sparrow in the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. His future in the franchise has been uncertain since his ex-wife Amber Heard’s domestic abuse allegations, which he strongly denies. However, having won his libel case, fans are hopeful that Disney will bring him back and there are certainly positive signs in the latest update about the future of the franchise.
Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer has had two future movies in the works. One is Pirates 6 and the other is a spin-off directed by Margot Robbie. The Australian actress recently told Vanity Fair that her film is now “dead,” adding: “I guess they don’t want to do it.”
However, Bruckheimer has now confirmed that this is not the case, just that they want to focus on Pirates 6 first. He told Collider: “I think that script will come through at a certain point. We developed two different stories for Pirates and the other one goes first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to do that one.”
The question is then, is this a movie that will involve Depp’s Jack Sparrow? The producer has had more to say.
Earlier this year Bruckheimer was asked if Depp would be in Pirates 6. He told The Sunday Times: “Not at the moment. The future is yet to be decided.” Well, that’s not exactly closing the door on Jack Sparrow, is it?
Then, in the summer, he told Comic Book that the original team from the first movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl, will be back. The 79-year-old said: “I’m really excited, it’s going to be fantastic. We’re just working on the script. One of the original writers, Ted Elliot, is helping to write it. He has a great mastery of the characters ”.
It’s not certain that Captain Jack will appear or make a cameo, but given what Depp said about wanting to give his character a decent send-off, surely he can be persuaded. These are some of his comments.

During his libel case, Depp said: “My feeling was that these characters should be able to have their own goodbye, so to speak. A franchise can only last so long and there’s a way to end a franchise like that and I thought the characters deserved to have their way out, to end the franchise on a very good note. I planned to continue until it was time to stop.
“Captain Jack Sparrow was a character that I created from scratch and it was something that of course I put a lot of effort into. [myself] in character and also working on these movies with these people and adding a lot of myself, a lot of my own rewriting of the dialogue, scenes and jokes. I didn’t quite understand how, after that long relationship and a pretty successful relationship certainly for Disney, I was suddenly guilty until proven innocent.”
At the time, Depp said he wouldn’t be back, but who knows? Time heals and he knows his fans are desperate for more Captain Jack.
