Helen Mirren Left ‘Confused’ by Shazam Fury of the Gods Story

While the DC Studios movie slate is currently in disarray, the next movie in the Shazam! The series is just around the corner. Shazam! Fury of the Gods brings back Billy Batson and his team of ragged orphans in a new brawl; this time, they are fighting gods. One of them, Hespera, is played by the legendary Helen Mirren, but she had some problems with the film’s script.

Mirren appeared on The Graham Norton Show earlier this week to discuss the superhero movie. During her conversation with the Irish talk show host, she confessed that many of the film’s goings-on were lost on her.

“Don’t ask me about the plot,” he laughed. “It’s too complicated!” It’s no surprise that she feels this way, since the movie’s premise is a bit crazy. Teenager Billy has received the power of the Greek gods and can transform into a superhero by shouting the magic word: Shazam!

Mirren’s character enters the fray to fight Batson and his friends, but that responsibility came equipped with a baggage of costumes.

The Oscar-winning actor explained: “We’re angry goddesses in incredibly heavy costumes. It was so hot and uncomfortable.”

Mirren is 77 years old, so you’d be forgiven for thinking her stunt days are over in film terms. Apparently not.

However, these stunts came at a price. Mirren said: “I did some of my own stunts, but I broke my finger.”

Despite literally breaking a bone over a superhero movie, he explained how “incredibly brave” he was throughout the ordeal. He explained that she “didn’t say anything or complain.”

“I wanted to be a real ‘trick’ person,” he added.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg recently spoke about bringing Mirren on board with rant on screen, where he explained how he expected her to have a specific type of energy on set. But actually, she exceeded her expectations.

“You have a kind of expectation,” he recalled. “Like: ‘Oh, it’s Dame Helen walking on set!’ But the first day she showed up, she was like, ‘Yeah! We need more sexual power on set! We’re here!'”

Sandberg added: “I was like, ‘oh, okay!'”

Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits theaters on March 17, 2023.

The Graham Norton Show airs Friday 24 February 2023 at 10:40pm on BBC One.
