Harry Potter ‘movie reboot in the works after Fantastic Beasts flop’

Over the past 20 years, Warner Bros. Wizarding World film franchise has grossed nearly $10 billion worldwide. However, after the eight Harry Potter movies based on JK Rowling’s best-selling books, the Fantastic Beasts prequels she’s written since then haven’t met with the same success. Now, more than a decade after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and a new report claims that the studio is poised to reboot the original set of films much sooner than fans had initially anticipated.

In November, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav noted how profitable the original Harry Potter movies had been for the studio and how he plans to focus on franchises going forward.

Now, well-known leaker WDW Pro has tweeted: “Exclusive Leak: WBD is reportedly looking to reboot the Harry Potter film franchise, including recasting, in the next 3-5 years. We will post some details of how I found out about this information, brought to you by a source, on the @ValliantRenegad channel tomorrow morning.” Take it with a pinch of salt, but this is what was said there.

WDW Pro continued: “The way they reboot this franchise doesn’t have to be your standard reboot, where we go back to the origin of the character we’ve already had an affair with. There are many different ways they could do it and we’re not here to tell you that we know what it is yet. They’re not even close, I think, to being at that point. In fact, according to the source, they don’t have a James Gunn kind of [new co-head of DC Studios] Guy still in charge of this. That’s part of what they’re looking for.”

The pair then discussed why Warner Bros. would be rebooted, especially after the disappointing box office of the most recent Fantastic Beasts movies compared to the originals directed by Daniel Radcliffe.

Valliant Renegade stated, “They feel that perhaps the original Harry Potter fandom is getting old and they want to reinvigorate or update this, or do something new to bring new audiences to theaters.”

WD Pro added: “From the point of view of the OG stuff, the core Harry Potter stuff, I mean it’s a dormant franchise, and that’s particularly why we’re told that in the next three to five years they are looking to restart this. Because all the other things within this Potter universe, within this wizarding division at Warner Bros. Discovery, aren’t taking off in the way they need to to sustain the franchise. And they have invested too much in the franchise for it to become dormant or secondary. They want it to be a very strong evergreen property. And by that we mean that it sells all the time, that it is always on the minds of consumers. And because they haven’t been able to get the other stuff, this kind of side stuff to take off and gain that momentum that they had with the originals, the thinking they have is it’s time Hollywood got over this fear of recasting. and so they are ready to do that.”
