Happy Valley’s James Norton would bring a ‘cool’ trait to James Bond

James Norton has rocked television screens across the country while playing Tommy Lee Royce in the BBC drama Happy Valley. But when he hasn’t gotten away with murder, he’s been at the forefront of the James Bond conversation. The British heartthrob is currently a frontrunner in the Bond odds, and has previously opened up about bringing some much-needed nuance to the role.

Norton spoke candidly about his 2021 Bond chances as Daniel Craig was about to leave the series. His departure followed his fifth and final performance as Bond, James Bond, in No Time to Die.

When asked what he would bring to the role, the 37-year-old explained that he would consider incorporating a part of his real life into the character of the super-spy.

“I’m a type one diabetic,” he explained. “How cool would it be to have a diabetic Bond?”

However, this idea was not just for him to inject himself into the role. He noted that giving Bond a new look would be a way to inspire kids around the world who are like him.

Norton had certainly done his homework, too, as he referenced the last-minute hiring of writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge by Bond bosses during the production of No Time To Die.

“Having people like Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a consultant on the last film was very, very smart,” he concluded. “And I’m very excited to see what she brings to the table.”

At the time of writing, the Bond odds have Norton sitting at the top of the pyramid. He is currently second in the Ladbrokes race, at an astonishing 3/1. He is only being beaten at the moment by UK favorite Henry Cavill who is an impressive 5/2.

Jessica O’Reilly of Ladbrokes said: “After evading the police in Happy Valley, James Norton fans would love to see him tackle 007 following Daniel Craig’s departure.”

Considering that the final episode of Happy Valley will hit TV screens this Sunday at 9pm, Norton will be out of a job pretty soon. He doesn’t have much on the list of him in the next few years, so Bond bosses Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson could certainly be looking their way at him soon. However, he will have to beat not only Cavill, but other heavyweights as well; including Aaron Taylor Johnson (3/1) and Regé-Jean Page (10/1).

The final episode of Happy Valley arrives on BBC One on Sunday at 9pm
