Golden Globes 2023 nominations: Elvis, Top Gun Maverick and more

The Golden Globes will return to television in 2023 after NBC pulled the controversial awards earlier this year following corruption allegations. The ceremony was boycotted by many celebrities due to the lack of diversity among voters, and Tom Cruise returned his three gongs. Hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, it’s back on the air next month and, as usual, its nominations give an early glimpse of who the big Oscar hopefuls will be.

Leading the 2023 Golden Globe nominations with eight in all is Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. The film takes place on a remote island off the coast of Ireland in the 1920s, when one day a man mysteriously decides that he no longer wants to be friends with his friend.

Other top contenders this year include Michelle Yeoh’s multiverse film Everything Everywhere All At Once (6), Damien Chazelle’s 1920s Hollywood epic Babylon (5) starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, and Steven Spielberg’s love letter to the movies, The Fabelmans (5).

Meanwhile, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis (3) includes a nomination for lead star Austin Butler, who could well be on his way to Oscar glory later this year after wowing audiences with his portrayal of the King. In addition, Guillermo del Toro’s critically acclaimed Pinocchio (3) is up for awards, along with Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick (2) and James Cameron’s Avatar The Way of Water (2).
