Glastonbury 2023 lineup: Arctic Monkeys round out all-male headliners

Glastonbury Festival 2023 attendees have already been promised Elton John for the legendary festival, and now the final headliners have been revealed. It has been confirmed that Arctic Monkeys will be joining the big weekend on Friday night. Their inclusion follows the release of their seventh studio album, The Car. They will be joined by Guns N’ Roses, who will take up the Saturday night slot.

These new announcements round out the weekend’s headlining list, raising even more questions about the festival’s all-male headlining list.

Lizzo will take the stage just before Guns N’ Roses, but Glastonbury co-organizer Emily Eavis seemed to suggest this was more of a technicality than anything else.

She recently told him The Guardian: “She could totally headline.” She added that the Pyramid stage often “sees more crowds in the afternoon than at night.” She added: “A lot of the artists could. But the starting job had already been promised to someone else.”

Eavis also confirmed that Guns N’ Roses was a second choice for Saturday’s headliner when another artist “dropped out”.

Eavis explained that a female headliner canceled them because she “changed her touring plans”. While she didn’t confirm who she might have been, Taylor Swift is the prime suspect. The American singer was originally going to headline the festival before the pandemic canceled it. Since then, she has made extensive touring plans after releasing a series of albums.

However, on the inclusion of Guns N’ Roses, Eavis said: “They will be brilliant and provide something totally different from the rest of the headliners.”

Glastonbury has received criticism over the years for booking all-white, all-male headliners and performers. The Guardian reports that 53 per cent of the 55 names revealed today are men.

Eavis said it is “totally focused on balancing our bill.”

Eavis continued: “It’s not just about gender, it’s about all aspects of diversity… We’re probably one of the only big shows that really focuses on this.”

Ultimately, Eavis blamed the music industry, asking it to invest in more female artists in the future.

“We are doing everything possible, so it is necessary to develop the pipeline,” he said. “This starts with the record companies, the radio. I can scream as loud as I want, but we need everyone on board.”

Last year, Paul McCartney headlined the festival along with Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar.
