Gladiator 2 has been mentioned several times in the last 23 years, but it seems that it has finally been confirmed to be in production. And this week, a new report has talked about the release date of the upcoming movie, which acts as a direct sequel to the first Gladiator movie, which hit theaters in 2000.
Gladiator 2 will reportedly take place some 20 years after the first film and will feature a new cast with some returning characters. Not much information has been released about the movie yet, but the new report says that Gladiator 2 will hit theaters next year.
Gladiator 2 will be released on November 22, 2024, according to Deadline.
Oscar-winning director Ridley Scott returns as director of the franchise and will also produce the film alongside Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher. David Scarpa has written the script.
Even more exciting is that fans of the first film will meet the main character of Gladiator 2.
Scott told Empire: “I’m already having [the next] Gladiator written now.” Referring to his upcoming film about French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, he added: “So when I’ve done Napoleon, Gladiator will be ready to go.”
He later told Deadline: “Oh, it’s been written. It’s been written. We’ve got a good footprint, a good logical place to go. You can’t just do another Gladiator-type movie. You have to keep going… there are quite a few components of the first to pick up the ball and continue it”.
The Sun later reported: “This has been in the making since 2018 and for a long time it looked like it would never see the light of day, but suddenly late last year the production team really came to life after settling on a new script that seemed to inspire them. A few months later, everything was working and now it’s rolling. They should be shooting in May, which means there’s a good chance the movie will be ready sometime in 2024.”
At this time, it is not known if Russell Crowe will reprise his role as the lead from the first film, Maximus Decimus Meridius.
Of course, the character was killed off in the film’s final moments, but that hasn’t stopped iconic movie characters from the past from returning in some capacity.
