Germany boss Hansi Flick concerned about confidence crisis at World Cup

Germany coach Hansi Flick admits that his team is suffering from a crisis of confidence at this World Cup. Substitute Niclas Fullkrug’s late equalizer salvaged a draw against Spain, but Germany remain in a tight qualifying corner heading into Thursday’s final group game against Costa Rica.

“I think the team needs more self-confidence,” Flick said. “I think things start to develop when you start to win, but maybe this will give us a boost to have the confidence in ourselves to score more goals. We need the determination of Niclas Fullkrug.”

The super substitute’s stunning finish was his second goal in just three appearances for Germany and drew praise from captain Ilkay Gundogan. “The end of our goal was incredible. We needed that,” Gundogan said.

“Now it’s down to the last game. The World Cup is crazy. You know it’s going to be dramatic with ups and downs.”

Álvaro Morata had given Spain the lead when he struck from the bench for the second game in a row. “I don’t care if I’m on the bench or not, I just want Spain to go as far as possible in this World Cup,” Morata said.

“I am a soldier just like everyone else on this team. We are very lucky not only to be a great team but also to be united.”

Spain coach Luis Enrique admitted his team were “disappointed” in the dressing room to see automatic qualification slip away, but remains optimistic.

“The result is a shame but we have to be happy because we are leaders in this group of death. Our objective is to go through as the first team in this group”, said Enrique.

Germany must now beat Costa Rica to have any hope of qualifying for the round of 16 of the tournament. They must also pray that Spain will do them a favor and avoid defeat against Japan, otherwise they will be sent crashing.

It’s sure to be a nervous and hectic night in Group E, in what has produced some of the most intriguing matches of the tournament so far.
