As 2023 approaches, so does the year 12 without the publication of The Winds of Winter. Four years have passed since the TV show Game of Thrones ended, which had to be based on the plot outlines of the unwritten novel and its sequel, A Dream of Spring. George RR Martin, who last confessed that he was 75 percent of the way to writing what will be a very big book, admitted to his latest struggles as well as dropping a big quip on plot details.
In a post-Christmas post, Martin wrote: “Another Christmas has come and gone, and the New Year is upon us. Where the hell does he go all the time? I took a few days off for vacation, I confess. I’m ashamed, I guess. But now I’m back in the salt mine, working… working on so many damn things, my head may soon explode. Yes, WINTER WINDS, yes, yes. AND THE DRAGON HOUSE, the second season. And several of the other successor shows that we’re developing with HBO. (Some of them are moving faster than others, as development always is. None have been greenlit yet, though we hope… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I don’t agree they’re dead You can take something off the shelf just as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes to HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.) We are also developing the Wild Cards TV series for Peacock, based (in large part) on FORT FREAK. And I have Wild Cards books to edit. Oh, and did I forget WINDS OF WINTER? No, of course not. But if I ever did, I know I’ll be reminded of it.
In a post just before Christmas, Martin wrote about Casterly Rock, the home of House Lannister, inspired by the Rock of Gibraltar.
He quipped: “Casterly Rock won’t be off the stage forever, I hope. I have two more novels left, and my plan is for one or more of my point-of-view characters to visit the Rock in THE WINDS OF WINTER or A DREAM OF SPRING, so I can show them all the wonders, terrors, and treasures of the House. Lannister. Firsthand In the meantime, feel free to ponder…could Casterly Rock take on the dragons? We know it can be taken by apes.
