Fullkrug’s run so far as Germany star salvages World Cup campaign

Few had heard of Nicolas Fullkrug before Germany’s World Cup clash with Spain. However, the 29-year-old wrote his name in the history books by drawing Hansi Flick’s side against La Roja, boosting their chances of reaching the last 16 of the competition in the process. So, with the Werder Bremen star now in the spotlight, it’s time to look at his career thus far…

Fullkrug actually started his career at Werder Bremen, making his debut for the Bundesliga team during the 2011/2012 season.

But he would go on to make a name for himself at Greuther Furth, who were playing in Germany’s second tier, scoring six goals in 24 games.

That would allow him to move to FC Nurnberg and at first it took him a while to get going.

The German star scored just nine goals during his first two years at the club but, in his third year, he really turned out well.

Fullkrug scored 15 goals in 34 games, with that form earning him another transfer.

In 2016, it was Hannover 96 who recruited him.

And his goals would help them secure promotion to Germany’s top flight, with the hitman scoring five times in 29 appearances that season.

With Hannover back in the Bundesliga, it almost seemed to act as a trigger for Fullkrug to turn good and realize his potential.

He marked his first year back in the German big time by scoring 16 goals in 36 appearances, making sure to avoid relegation in the process.

The 2018/2019 campaign was one to forget for the striker, with injuries that prevented him from continuing to play.

However, that did not stop Bremen from signing him and he has been a key player for the club ever since, staying with them despite their relegation in the 2020/2021 season.

So far this season, he has been in remarkable form, proving himself against Flick and earning himself a World Cup call-up as a result.

Fullkrug has scored 10 goals in 14 league games so far this season, as well as providing an assist in the DFB-Pokal.

Without the 29-year-old, Germany would face elimination. But this draw gives them the chance to fight their way out of a group that also includes Japan and Costa Rica.

Fullkrug could now start when Germany take on Costa Rica in their final World Cup match on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Spain will take on Japan later that day knowing victory would see them top their group and potentially give them an easier tie in the round of 16.
