After months of public speculation, he finally confirmed the long-suspected state of health and the cause of his impending death.
Peter says: “Contrary to popular belief, he did not publish the statement about his condition the day before he died. It was published at 8pm on a Friday night, but the papers published it on Saturday morning.”
“I’ve never seen him so relaxed because the secret was out there. There was nothing to hide or worry about. So he could prepare. It was such a relief to let it out.”
Around 24 hours later, Freddie died. Peter believes that his friend chose to let him go.
Says Peter: “We all knew it couldn’t be too long, but Freddie’s doctor had said he might be with us for a few more days.
“I tend to feel like Freddie had decided he’d had enough and it was time to do it on his own terms.”
