Football fan arrested after player set off fireworks on pitch

Police have arrested a football fan after a firework exploded after he was thrown onto the pitch during AFC Barrow’s 2-0 victory over Carlisle United in the Papa John’s Trophy. The incident occurred within the first three minutes of the Cumbria derby, delaying the match for 17 minutes, and did not resume until someone was confirmed to be in custody.

Carlisle goalkeeper Michael Kelly was the player closest to the pyrotechnics, but luckily he escaped injury and the match was quickly stopped to protect the safety of the players. Talks were ongoing between match officials and police, leading to the 17-minute heist, with Barrow fans evicted from the side of the house while an arrest was made. The club has vowed to ban the culprit from the stadium for life.

Barrow ultimately prevailed once the teams returned to the field with goals from Sam Foley and Josh Kay sealing a 2-0 victory for the home team.

Barrow’s dedicated police team quickly issued a statement regarding their Twitter account after the incident confirming that they had made an arrest.

It read: “Working together with the club, Cumbria Police have now arrested 1 man in connection with fireworks thrown onto the pitch in the early stages of the match. I remind you that this is an offense and is extremely dangerous and will not be tolerated.”

“Barrow Association Football Club must emphasize that we do not want to be associated with these people and that they are not welcome at SO Legal Stadium.

“As a result of this, the Club will now seek to implement measures to ensure that this incident does not happen again.”

The investigation into the incident remains open and anyone with information about what happened is encouraged to contact PC Rickie Wallbank, AFC Barrow’s dedicated police officer via email address [email protected] uk.
